Dishonesty and lying in the light of Islam

A very common saying is 'Honesty is the best policy'. On the other hand when it come to our social life and relationships, lying and dishonesty sometimes becomes a major sin. It is also said that it is the root of every evil.
Why lying and dishonesty is a major sin and what scholars say about lying and dishonesty?

It may take care of the present, but it has no future. Worse than telling a lie is spending the rest of your life staying true to a lie. ~Robert Brault
We tell lies when we are afraid-----, afraid of what we don't know, afraid of what others will think, afraid of what will be found out about us. But every time we tell a lie, the thing that we fear grows stronger. ~Tad Williams
Lying and dishonesty always leads to hypocrisy.

Why it is said dishonesty is a major sin and it is the door to many evils ?

A person who continues and insists upon lying commits a major sin. Lying starts with a lie on the tongue. Then these lies become the truth to you, to the extent that you may even fight with people if they don't believe you. After that, the lies become part of your actions, and everything you do is based on lies (compulsive lying). When you reach this state, you start to do anything you want because lying has become so easy for you. You can lie and cheat and steal.

Lying, dishonesty and Islam:
Allah (SWT) says in the holy Qur'an:So that Allah may reward the honest ones for their honesty, and so that He may torture the hypocrites if He wishes, or forgive them. Therefore, it is not possible to be a believer if you insist upon and continue to be dishonest. One of the two will win.
The Results of Lying on the Day of Judgment : Allah (SWT) will say: "This is a day on which the truthful will profit from their truth: theirs are Gardens, with rivers flowing beneath, their eternal home: Allah well-pleased with them, and they with Allah: that is the great salvation, (The fulfillment of all desires). (Qur'an: 5:119).

The Prophet (PBUH) said: Be sure you are always honest, even if you feel it will lead you to your death, for it will always save you.
Omar Ibn Al-Khattab said: If being honest degrades and lowers me, and it would very rarely do so, it is more likeable to me that having dishonesty raise me, and it would rarely do so.
Omar Ibn Abd Al-Azeez said: By Allah, I have not said a single lie since I found out that lying dishonors the people who commit it.
All sins are associated with lying, as you cover them up in front of other people. If lying is easy for you, then committing major sins and lying to hide them becomes a normal part of your life.
